There are 13 LEPC regions in the state that operate under the authority of the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC). LEPCs were established by the SERC from the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know-Act of 1986, enacted as Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act to prevent emergency situations from hazardous chemicals. LEPCs were originally established to focus on hazardous chemicals. However, LEPCs now promote emergency preparedness and planning for all hazards that may affect communities in the region, not just chemical emergencies.
The LEPC 7 serves as a forum for collaboration among fire departments, law enforcement agencies, rescue squads, town officials, hospitals, schools, private industries, human service organizations, animal health & welfare professionals, local businesses, and other public safety organizations, and serves a resource for those entities. The LEPC 7 assists in sponsoring training and obtaining grant funding for the county, as well as writing and updating emergency plans. LEPC 7 meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend or become a member of the committee.
